The error was:<\/p>\n<p>Load control template file \/_controltemplates\/SearchArea.ascx failed: &#8216;Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls.SearchArea,Microsoft.SharePoint,Version=12.0.0.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c&#8217; is not allowed here because it does not extend class &#8216;System.Web.UI.UserControl&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>After some research I found out that the SearchArea.ascx file was left behind because we upgraded from WSS 3.0 to Sharepoint Foundation 2010. Renaming the file on disk to SearchArea.ascx_old stopped the errors from popping up.
